Chapter Twenty-Six

The centre was quiet when Falcon returned from her patrol. Just past mid-day, she thought a cup of tea would be nice before looking in on Jay. She gave a small grimace, she should probably give Hawk a visit too.

It wasn’t that she disliked the warrior. Walking towards the kitchen after deactivating her medallion, Falcon wondered why a wariness came upon her when thinking of Hawk.

Falcon glanced at the kettle and saw there was already water in it, so flicked the switch to get it boiling. She picked up the same, chipped cream cup she’d used that morning at breakfast and retrieved a teabag from the jar.

Falcon snorted when the difference between Jay and Hawk hit her. It was because Hawk was a Predgarian. He was smart, calculating despite his frivolous act and might pass along anything she said to the others. That was the irritating thing about these people, Falcon felt like her every word was being discussed behind her back.

Jay wasn’t like that. He’d been driven to this place because of circumstances beyond his control and she was no different. Neither of them would’ve chosen to be here.

Falcon shook her head as the kettle finished boiling, steam rising in a furious spout. She tried to concentrate on the pretty stream of water pouring into her cup as she tipped the kettle. Best not to think about it, she couldn’t change anything anyway.

‘Oh, hi, Falcon.’

Falcon glanced around. ‘Tiger,’ she greeted. Pausing, she remembered Wolf, and how she’d hurt him. He’d tried to reassure her the others would understand if he told them why she’d been avoiding them in the training hall.

She took a deep breath, had Wolf told Tiger yet? Falcon didn’t want to ask, but maybe she might volunteer the information? ‘Would you like a cup of tea?’

‘Sure.’

As Falcon brought out a cup from the cabinet in front of her, she heard Tiger sit at the table. ‘Have you heard yet?’

Falcon glanced back. ‘Heard what?’

‘We’re going to be getting a new warrior.’

Falcon paused in the act of reaching for another teabag. ‘A warrior? Has the temple in Central Sector sent one? I wouldn’t think they would with Jay and I just enrolling.’

Tiger shook her head, a fierce grin covering her face. ‘His name is Phil Nealson.’

Falcon’s eyebrows rose. ‘Sugar?’

‘Eh?’

‘In your tea.’

‘Oh. One please.’

‘A civilian then?’ Falcon asked.

Tiger shook her head again. ‘Nope. Ex-Dakkonin.’

Placing Tiger’s tea on the table, Falcon’s fingers froze on the handle.

‘Wow,’ Tiger commented. ‘You actually look nervous.’

Falcon threw her a dirty scowl and stepped back, letting Tiger get to her tea. ‘Are you sure?’

‘Am I sure you look nervous?’

Falcon’s scowl deepened at the woman’s feigned innocence. Why must she always act so childish?

She turned away, not wanting to be there anymore.

‘Oh, come on, Falcon, you can’t keep running away like this.’

Falcon’s shoulders rose as she tensed and spun around. ‘What?’ Her voice hissed across the short space but didn’t care.

‘Every time I’m in the room you disappear. If you’ve got a problem with me let’s talk about it.
